Hamilton Alliance Against Substance Abuse

Who We Are?

Alcoholism and drug abuse are significant community health issues facing Hamilton Township and the goal of reducing alcoholism and drug abuse in our community is best fostered by cooperation and active participation by the township with those local, county and state agencies established to address these issues.

As such, the Hamilton Alliance Against Substance Abuse (HAASA) was established in 1990 to coordinate township wide anti-drug and anti-alcohol efforts and to promote the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the township. The HAASA accomplishes this by identifying alcoholism and drug abuse prevention, education and community needs in the township; implementing programs; and seeking funds in support of substance abuse prevention programs.

The HAASA consists of 11 members. The following individuals serve as ex officio members of the committee: the mayor, the chief of the division of police, the presiding judge of the township municipal court and the superintendent of the township school district. Seven private citizens who reside in the township are also appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council.

Prevention is the Key

Prevention is any activity that is intended to reduce or minimize the incidence of alcoholism drug abuse and its negative consequences. Prevention programs may vary widely, but generally are associated with information, education, alternative behaviors, and primary and early intervention activities. These services focus on reducing risk factors and building protective factors and may be directed at any segment of the population. Several prevention activities or strategies may be used effectively in combination.
